Strategy

As the world changes, so must PDPA. Every few years, PDPA establishes new priorities and identifies necessary tactics.

Our starting point is always this: powerful institutions are threatening the future of freedom — autonomy, dignity, and humanity of individuals and communities. PDPA must be an obstacle to their bad behaviours, disrupt their plans, and identify a hopeful path forward.

So we horizon scan, consult, engage our partners across the world, test and explore — all to identify top issues and domains for us to address.

Our current strategy has the following strategic areas:

Challenging Corporate Data Exploitation

We want to see a world where we are in control of information about us. Companies are innovating on surveillance capitalism, reducing people to data for exploitation.

Contesting Government Data and System Exploitation

The unprecedented surveillance capabilities of governments outstrip the safeguards for our rights. Governments are innovating on how to expand exploitation.

Defending Democracy and Dissent

The seamless way we communicate using some of these technologies has helped many to organise politically and to express dissent online and offline. But the hidden data harvesting on which many of these technologies rely also threatens our ability to challenge power, no matter the type of government.

Safeguarding Peoples’ Dignity

The promises made with innovation have not been enjoyed by all equally. Innovative solutions can be designed to empower and serve individuals and communities, rather than state and corporate power. A new approach to data and technology must be established to make this a reality.
